Monstrosities of Monsanto: Combating Corporate Propaganda via Satirical News Parody as Environmental Activism

The purpose of this research paper is two-fold: 1) It chronicles the ways in which the company Monsanto makes use of the 5 layers of the propaganda model (Chomsky & Herman, 1988) to advance its corporate interests, and further integrate it’s poisonous products into the world’s food supply. 2) It presents ways in which political satire news programs have covered issues related to Genetically Modified Foods, and food production. Particularly, the ways in which it has provided a more salient critique than the mainstream media’s coverage of Monsanto.
